Fin da bambina sono rimasta affascinata dalla materia della “faience” egiziana, presente nei musei di tutto il mondo ma ancora poco conosciuta. Oltre all'interesse per i contesti storici e i significati, mi sono chiesta quali risultati avrebbe potuto portare l'uso contemporaneo di questa sostanza. Durante la mia residenza ho esplorato come le antiche formulazioni della “faience” blu egiziana possano illuminare le mie domande contemporanee sulla bellezza, la mostruosità e la trasformazione culturale. Attraverso una ricerca che unisce la stampa 3D, la modellazione digitale e l'artigianato ceramico, ho cercato di capire come il confine tra il comune e il prezioso non risieda nel materiale, ma nella pazienza della creazione. Per la mostra a C.R.E.T.A.Rome presenterò alcuni esempi dei miei esperimenti e condividerò il processo creative ma anche le conclusioni su un argomento in cui ho cercato un ponte tra questa nuova materialità blu e i miei archetipi scultorei.

Auriea Harvey (nata nel 1971, Stati Uniti/Belgio) è un'artista che vive a Roma. Il suo lavoro si concentra sulla traduzione materiale di modelli digitali 3D. Utilizzando la stampa 3D insieme a tecniche tradizionali, porta una sintesi di mitologia, autobiografia e riferimenti storico-artistici in una pratica che spazia dalla scultura al disegno, dalla simulazione all'installazione. Le sue opere sono presenti in importanti collezioni quali il Whitney Museum of American Art di New York, il Museum on the Moving Image di New York, la KADIST Collection di Parigi e la Rhizome's Net Art Anthology online.

Since I was a child I have been utterly mesmerised by the material of Egyptian faience, seen in museums throughout the world yet so little illuminated as a material. In addition to an interest in the historical contexts and meanings I wondered at what using this substance in contemporary ways would bring. My residency was spent exploring how ancient formulations of Egyptian blue paste “faience” can illuminate my contemporary questions about beauty, monstrosity, and cultural transformation. Through research bridging 3D printing, digital modeling, and ceramic craft, I sought to understand how the boundary between base and precious lies not in material but in the patience of making. For the exhibition at C.R.E.T.A. Rome, I will present samples of my experiments and share the process, but also conclusions of subject matter where I looked for a bridge between this novel blue materiality and my sculptural archetypes.

 

Auriea Harvey (b. 1971 USA/BE) is an artist based in Rome. Her work focuses on material translations of digital 3d models. Using 3d printing along with traditional techniques she brings a synthesis of mythology, autobiography, and art historical reference to a practice that spans sculpture, drawings, simulations, and installations. Her work can be found in major collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC; The Museum on the Moving Image, NYC; KADIST Collection, Paris; and Rhizome’s Net Art Anthology, Online.
