Gli artisti in residenza di giugno a CRETA Rome con linguaggi paralleli esplorano la dimensione del tempo personale e della storia antica con soluzioni espressive pop e diversificazioni mater-iche. C.R.E.T.A. Rome is pleased to invite you to the double solo exhibition “Echoes of the Empire” by resident artists Zen Du (Russia/USA) and Stuart Asprey (USA). The artists in residence at CRETA Rome this June use parallel artistic languages to explore the dimension of personal time and ancient history through pop-inspired expressive approaches and diverse use of materials. The exhibition, curated by Paolo Porelli and Lori-Ann Touchette, will be held at the C.R.E.T.A. Rome gallery in Via dei Delfini, 17 on 26 June, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.

ZEN DU
L’opera, realizzata durante la residenza artistica presso C.R.E.T.A. Rome, esplora la Città Eterna come un paesaggio complesso in equilibrio tra venerazione e rovina. Ampliando la mia pratica artistica che indaga la tensione tra conservazione ed erosione, questi assemblaggi in ceramica fungono da reperti di sopravvivenza eterna.
Questo lavoro si concentra in modo particolare sull’immensa ricchezza di texture lasciate dalle rovine antiche e sul modo in cui la vita moderna interagisce continuamente con esse. Frammenti frantumati, aggregati grossolani e motivi classici romani si fondono in entità unificate. L’installazione a parete è fisicamente ancorata agli onnipresenti sanpietrini – quelle pietre su cui ci si imbatte letteralmente ogni giorno per le strade – che fungono da costante e concreto promemoria dei resti architettonici antichi incastonati proprio sotto i piedi del mondo contemporaneo.
Zen Du è un’artista ceramista, docente universitaria e educatrice artistica, la cui pratica artistica si concentra sull’esplorazione dei materiali e sul potenziale trasformativo dell’arte. Zen è nata in Russia nel 1983. Ha conseguito la laurea triennale in Linguistica in Russia e, poco dopo, si è trasferita negli Stati Uniti. Nel 2012 ha conseguito la laurea in Belle Arti presso l’Appalachian State University, nella Carolina del Nord (USA). Nel 2016 ha conseguito il Master in Belle Arti (MFA) presso il San Francisco Art Institute, in California, USA. Ha esposto in numerose mostre collettive e personali in tutta la Baia di San Francisco e nella Central Valley californiana, tra cui una mostra personale al Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. Le sue opere fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche nel Maine e in California e sono state pubblicate su Studio Art Magazine, Marin Independent Journal e Art Business Magazine, oltre che su altre testate cartacee e online. Zen vive e lavora a Chico, in California, negli Stati Uniti.
The work developed during the artist's residency at C.R.E.T.A. Rome explores the eternal city of Rome as a complex landscape balanced between reverence and ruin. Expanding on my artistic practice that investigates the tension between preservation and erosion, these ceramic assemblages serve as artifacts of eternal survival.
This work focuses heavily on the immense richness of textures left behind by ancient ruins and the way modern life continuously interacts with them. Crushed fragments, coarse aggregates, and classical Roman motifs are fused into unified entities. The wall installation is physically anchored by the ubiquitous sanpietrini - the cobblestone rocks one literally stumbles upon every day in the streets, serving as a constant, grounding reminder of the ancient architectural remnants embedded right beneath the feet of the contemporary world.
Zen Du is a ceramic artist, college professor, and art educator whose practice centers on material inquiry and the transformative potential of art. Zen was born in Russia in 1983. She received her BA in Linguistics in Russia and shortly after moved to the United States. She received her BFA from the Appalachian State University, North Carolina, USA in 2012. She received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute, California, USA in 2016. She has exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibitions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and California’s Central Valley, including a solo exhibition at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work is held in public collections in Maine and California and has been featured in Studio Art Magazine, the Marin Independent Journal, and Art Business Magazine, among other print and online publications. Zen lives and works in Chico, California, USA.
STUART ASPREY
Stuart Asprey è il prodotto di un’infanzia trascorsa in continuo spostamento. La sua educazione nomade ha rafforzato l’idea che nessun confine possa confinare il corpo o la mente. L’opera d’arte collettiva in ceramica cattura testimonianze visive su un supporto che, una volta cotto, diventa un segno permanente delle nostre commedie e tragedie, una prova dei nostri difetti e delle nostre capacità, un ricordo dei nostri tesori e delle nostre tribolazioni, nonché una leggenda delle nostre lotte e delle nostre curiosità.
Questo corpus di opere prosegue una sequenza narrativa che riconosce il fatto che non possiamo essere limitati dal nostro passato; dedichiamo una grande quantità di tempo a cercare di ricreare (o negare) il passato e, a lungo andare, è proprio il nostro passato a definirci e a plasmare gli individui nelle persone che siamo oggi.
In quanto frutto creativo del mio ambiente, devo un’enorme gratitudine al potere dell’osservazione: vedere cose che gli altri scelgono di ignorare, guardare in luoghi che non sempre sono piacevoli e colmare le lacune per cogliere il quadro d’insieme.
Stuart Asprey è un docente e artista di studio e ha partecipato a oltre 150 mostre nazionali e internazionali. Ha conseguito la laurea triennale in arti figurative con una specializzazione secondaria in amministrazione aziendale presso la Humboldt State University in California e il Master of Fine Arts (MFA) presso l’Università dell’Oklahoma. Ha tenuto conferenze e dimostrazioni alla conferenza del National Council on the Education for Ceramic Arts (NCECA) a Denver e Kansas City, all’Università dell’Arkansas, all’Anderson Ranch Art Center (Colorado), ai Redstar Studios (KC), all’Hardesty Art Center (Tulsa), alla Midwestern State University (Texas), all’Hudgens Center for the Arts di Atlanta, all’Università delle Hawaii e in numerosi altri college, università e centri d’arte in tutto il paese. Attualmente Stuart è professore ordinario di ceramica e coordinatore del corso di laurea presso la Scuola di Arti Visive dell’Università dell’Oklahoma.
Stuart Asprey is a product of an early itinerant childhood. His nomadic upbringing reinforced the idea that no border contains the body or mind. The collective ceramic artwork captures pictorial evidence onto a medium that once fired, becomes a permanent sign of our comedies and tragedies, proof of our faults and proficiencies, a memoire of our treasures and tribulations, and a legend of our struggles and curiosities.
This body of work continues a narrative sequence that acknowledges the fact that we cannot be contained by our past, we spend vast amounts of time trying to recreate (or deny) the past, and in the long run, it is our past that defines us and shapes individuals into the people we are today.
As a creative product of my environment, I owe an extreme amount of gratitude to the power of observation: seeing things that others choose not to, looking in places that may not always be pleasant, and filling in the blanks in order to see the bigger picture.
Stuart Asprey is an educator and studio artist and has participated in over 150 national and international exhibitions. He earned his undergraduate degree in studio art and a minor in business administration from Humboldt State University in California and his MFA from the University of Oklahoma. He has lectured and demonstrated at the National Council on the Education for Ceramic Arts conference (NCECA) in Denver and Kansas City, the University of Arkansas, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Colorado), Redstar Studios (KC), the Hardesty Art Center (Tulsa), Midwestern State University (Texas), the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Atlanta, the University of Hawaii and numerous other colleges, universities and art centers across the country. Stuart is currently a Full Professor of Ceramics and the Undergraduate Coordinator in the School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma.
