​Il corpus di opere che Raphaëlle Groulx-Julien sviluppato durante la residenza è il risultato dell'osservazione dei resti dell'architettura romana che caratterizza il paesaggio cittadino e della storia ceramica della regione che continua a essere riesumata a ogni nuovo sviluppo. La fusione delle forme degli edifici e degli oggetti comuni, e in alcuni casi l'aspetto leggermente antropomorfo dei pezzi, sono una riflessione sul rapporto tra gli spazi e gli oggetti quotidiani che l'uomo crea per sé e investe di significato. L'obiettivo è anche quello di rendere omaggio alla vita reale che emerge da queste antiche creazioni: piante, erbacce e fiori comuni. Poco sofisticati e provocatori, spuntano da ogni fessura che appare tra i mattoni accuratamente impilati delle creazioni umane. Ci ricordano con umorismo che la materia, organizzata in modo mirato secondo un progetto ponderato e investita da profonde riflessioni, è pur sempre materia. Affermano che altre forme di vita prospereranno senza tener conto delle nostre intenzioni. Questa espressione di vita e individualità sembra incarnare un dialogo a lungo atteso tra l'uomo e la natura, e fondare il primo all'interno della seconda. In un modo più simbolico, accenna anche a dialoghi interni con parti trascurate della nostra psiche che inevitabilmente cercheranno di liberarsi dal nostro senso di sé, a volte rigido. Sebbene possano spaventare, queste rotture sembrano essere la chiave per sperimentare il meraviglioso.

Raphaëlle Groulx-Julien è un'artista emergente con sede a Montréal (Tiohtià:ke). Si è laureata presso il programma MFA dell'Università del Québec a Montréal. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto a Montreal e a New York in mostre collettive e personali. Concentrandosi sul linguaggio della ceramica come mezzo di espressione, nella sua pratica esplora il meraviglioso. Cercando di scoprire cosa fa sì che una semplice materia passi improvvisamente dall'ordinario al sorprendente, esamina il rapporto tra il sé e il mondo.

The body of works developed during the residency is a result of the observation of the remains of Roman architecture that characterizes the city landscape, and of the ceramic history of the region which keeps being exhumed with every new development. The fusion of the forms of the buildings and common objects, and in some cases the slightly anthropomorphic aspect of the pieces, are a reflection on the relationship between the spaces and everyday items that humans create for themselves and invest with meaning. It also aims at paying tribute to the actual life that emerges from these ancient creations: plants, weeds and common flowers. Unsophisticated and defiant, they pop through every crack that appears between the carefully stacked bricks of human creations. They act as a humorous reminder that matter purposefully organized following thoughtful designs, and invested with deep reflections, is still matter. They assert that other forms of life will thrive without consideration for our intentions. This expression of life and individuality seems to embody a long overdue dialogue between humans and nature, and to ground the former within the latter. In a more symbolic way, it also hints at internal dialogues with overlooked parts of our psyche that will inevitably try to break free from our sometimes rigid sense of self. While possibly scary, these breaks seem to be a key to experiencing the marvellous.​

BIO

Raphaëlle Groulx-Julien is an emerging artist based in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke). She graduated from the MFA program of the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her work has been exposed in Montreal and New York city in group and solo exhibitions. Concentrating on the language of ceramics as a means of expression, in her practice she explores the wonderful. By trying to find out what makes simple matter suddenly shift from ordinary to striking, she examines the relationship between the self and the world.
